When I was in high school, my brother was diagnosed with diabetes. There was a lot of stuff he had to carry with him at all times while he figured out how best to manage the changes to his routines.
 One of the most important things that came with the new found information was his Medical ID bracelet.
 We all had ID bracelets when we were younger which we associated with an overly worried mother who thought it was more likely we would get lost and would need to ask an adult to help us get back to the address listed on this trinket on our wrist.
 The realization that it was a practical tool in the event should he not be able to communicate was a bit jarring. What happens if he isn't wearing it? Should he get the info tattooed?

My little one was learning about emergency services at school and she came home so excited to tell me about 9-1-1 and the knowledge she now possessed to be of service should the need arise.
 I began talking to her about the process she was taught for calling 9-1-1 and realized that it hadn't diverted much from when I was taught 30 years ago.
 I remember the stickers I brought home from school that my mother graciously allowed me to label our phone with so that I could identify the numbers I would need to press on the corded phone in our living room.
 As I pondered this, I knew that we no longer have a corded phone in the home, much less the rotary phone we kept around as a novelty for her, but I began to wonder if even I knew how to dial emergency services from my smart phone while it was locked.
